The staff are lovely and friendly, family and child friendly. They often have specials and entertainment and a general good vibe. There is inside and outside dining as well as heating inside in the winter. Bathrooms are clean and tidy and the bar is very homely and more like an old English pub than a bar. Highly recommend visiting.

Stopped at the Pig & Whistle after visiting the Big Pineapple — a good, solid, no-nonsense meal in a place with real history. One of the oldest licensed pubs in South Africa, it still carries that old-world charm. Simple, relaxed, and unpretentious — nothing feels staged. Food was straightforward and well done. The fish and chips were fresh with a crisp batter and generous portions. Calamari was tender, not rubbery — always a good sign. Menu is what you expect from a traditional pub — burgers, fish, a few salads — nothing overcomplicated, but it works. Not fine dining, and it’s not trying to be. Just honest food in a historic setting. A good stop if you’re in Bathurst — especially if you’re already exploring the area.

I have so many good things to say about Bathurst in general. This place was just wonderful, clean rooms, stunning soap, great water and attention to detail. Considering how old it is, they do a damn good job at upkeep and maintenance. Food was wonderful, bar very warm and locals. Great vibe, will definitely stay longer next time. Only thing I can complain about is that there's no after/before hour staff, in case you would need anything.

Had lunch there on Boxing Day with my son & granddaughter from the UK & my husband, daughter & myself. It was extremely busy. The food was delicious & our waiter was amazing. My order was specific & he got it spot on. Will definitely go back there again.
