Before vines could be planted, alien vegetation had to be cleared, and the balance of nature restored. The Rudd family successfully cleared the 67 hectares of land, salvaging a block of Chenin Blanc that would become its maiden release and planted the remaining 40 hectares with indigenous vegetation and gardens for guests of the Manor House to explore. As ardent wine connoisseurs, Brookdale Estate is the pinnacle of the Rudd family’s passion. Here, Mediterranean varieties, a unique Paarl terroir and innovative winemaking techniques are brought together under the visionary hand of owner, Tim Rudd, and winemaker, Kiara Scott Farmer. Venues here are ranked on their Google rating and review volume, and nothing else. No venue pays for a position on this page, and no quote you receive through The Aisle carries a commission.

Start with the two things that rule venues out fastest: your guest count and the province you want to be in. Style and budget are worth loosening early, because most venues in South Africa have not published a price, and filtering on one hides the majority of the country.

Two questions worth asking every venue, wherever they are: what the wet-weather plan is in writing, and what happens to the day during load-shedding. Both are the sort of thing that only becomes a problem once it is too late to change venue.

Set your guest count and town first. Ignore price at this stage — most venues here have not published one, and filtering on it would hide most of the country.

Ask all of them the same question

Send one enquiry with your date, numbers and budget to every shortlisted venue at once. Replies that answer the same question are the only ones you can actually compare.

For a Saturday in the high season (roughly October to April), 12 to 18 months is safest, especially in the Cape Winelands and major cities. Outside peak season, six to nine months is usually enough. Friday and Sunday weddings open up much later and often cost less.

Because we will not invent one. Price is published on a small fraction of the 1 834 venues in our dataset — most quote per wedding based on guest count, season and what is included. Where we hold a real figure we show it; where we do not, the card says so and the enquiry asks on your behalf.

Ask every venue for its generator capacity in kVA and what it actually runs — some cover lights and sound only, not the kitchen. A venue with a backup water supply and a full-load generator is worth asking about specifically.
