Great place! Had a wonderful stay, a lot of great food (pasta is probably better in Italy but the rest was amazing), the staff is so sweet and funny and helps with planning beautiful hikes! Can definitely recommend the sentinel peak of course!! We did the hike mit Mic as a guide which was great! The rooms in the bungalows (5-6 per unit) are great, we had valley/mountain view and the night sky was stunning! Just pack some warm clothing, the wind can get rough :)

I forgot to take photos of the rooms, but there are plenty of them in the other reviews. But I did take photos of the views. And the views are magical. Where else can you see something like that? As for the rooms: they are spacious and have a very interesting design. There are warm blankets in case it gets too chilly.

Let me start with the positives: the via ferrata experience with a guide was genuinely excellent, and the location itself — as a base for the Amphitheatre hike — is spectacular. Unfortunately, that's where the praise ends. Witsieshoek appears to know it has a captive audience. It is essentially the only accommodation option in the area for anyone attempting the Amphitheatre, and it prices and operates accordingly. This was, by a significant margin, the most expensive place we stayed during an extended trip through South Africa — and by an equally significant margin, the worst value. The food is very poor. Given there are no alternatives nearby, guests have no choice but to eat there. The kitchen should take that responsibility more seriously, not less. The room had cockroaches, and I woke up to spiders in the bed. For a property at this price point, that is simply unacceptable. The staff were consistently apathetic — unhelpful and seemingly uninterested in improving anyone's stay. The worst experience, however, was the laundry service. I sent a bag of clothes to be washed before heading on safari, and they came back damp and reeking overwhelmingly of cigarette smoke — as though they had been laundered in an ashtray. I was furious. I had to pay to have everything re-washed urgently in Johannesburg at additional cost. Now back home, having washed those clothes three or four more times, they still carry the smell. The damage is real and ongoing. If you are hiking the Amphitheatre, you will likely end up here — there isn't much choice. Book the via ferrata guide, enjoy the scenery, and manage your expectations for everything else. Do not use the laundry service.

Stayed here specifically for the Tugela Falls and Amphitheatre hike since lodge is a mere 30 mins very bad dirt road drive to reach the Sentinel Carpark. Surprisingly, the road after the barrier gate are remarkably well paved in the form of bricks! You have to pay 90/ pp for Northern Drakensberg Conservation Fee. Best to have the exact cash ready in case they lose connection for card payments or change. Remember to ask for receipts so the money really go towards conservation! We had paid the shuttle fee (320/ pp return) online beforehand. Since our shuttle to the carpark was 6 AM, the staff had our packed breakfast (sandwich, bar, banana, apple, egg, peanuts) ready by 5.45 AM. In order to hike, we paid another 145/ pp for the Northern Drakensberg Hiking Permit. Ask for a receipt for this as well. Room was comfortable but that is the minimum to be expected given the price tag. We didn't buy their dinner; we ordered a pizza at Debonairs in Mandela Park, Phuthaditjhaba, before coming up.
