This review is related to the restaurant. My husband and I chose Hartford House to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, specifically because of its reputation and standing in the Midlands. Unfortunately, the experience was so disappointing that I felt compelled to share it.
We ordered the four-course tasting menus (one non-vegetarian and one vegetarian) at approximately R650 per person. While the opening soup was enjoyable, the remainder of the non-vegetarian menu was exceptionally poor.
The chicken masala was dry, rubbery, flavourless, and severely overcooked. The steak course was even worse. I requested it medium, but it arrived well done, dry, and extremely tough. I sent it back, only to receive a second steak that was also well done and overcooked. The catering manager came to our table, inspected the replacement steak, and acknowledged that it was not cooked correctly.
The dessert was equally disappointing. The almond cake with Swiss meringue was dense, dry, and unpleasant to eat. My husband's vegetarian menu was generally better, but he also found the dessert disappointing.
What was most frustrating was the response from the staff. Every complaint was met with blank stares and little meaningful effort to recover the experience. There was no genuine sense of urgency, accountability, or concern that a guest was unhappy.
During the evening, we were informed that the Head Chef and Sous Chef had resigned and that the person speaking to us was primarily a pastry chef. This was surprising given that Hartford House continues to market itself based on the culinary team featured on its website. Rather than addressing our concerns, we were simply told to "come back another time" and that it would be better.
To add insult to injury, despite the multiple issues raised and management acknowledging that the steak was incorrectly cooked, the only concession offered was a reduction of approximately R30 on a bill of nearly R1,500. It wasn't the amount that bothered us- it was what it represented. It felt dismissive and failed to acknowledge just how poor the overall experience had been.
The long waiting times between courses only added to the disappointment.
For a restaurant positioning itself as a premium dining destination, this experience fell significantly below expectations. Poor food can occasionally happen anywhere. What truly separates a good establishment from a poor one is how they respond when things go wrong. Unfortunately, Hartford House failed on both counts. I sincerely hope management takes these concerns seriously, as our experience was nowhere near the standard that Hartford House claims to offer.
