About Tenahead Mountain Lodge

Tenahead Mountain Lodge is situated very remotely, near the little town of Rhodes in the Eastern Cape.

Nestled along the border of Lesotho, this 5-star country house is situated 2500m above sea level, earning it the title of “Highest Mountain Lodge in South Africa”. While the road to Tenahead is long and a little bumpy, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the magnificent mountainous landscape. While you will not need a 4x4 to reach Tenahead, a high clearance vehicle is strongly advised. When you reach Tenahead, you will be transported to another world. This exclusive lodge is best described by their slogan – a heavenly place between sky and earth! The 7 en-suite bedrooms provide the ultimate in comfort. A cosy fireplace will keep you warm, while the view from the large bedroom window will leave you feeling like you are one with the mountains. You'll even be spoilt to these views from the bathroom. All the spacious living areas of the lodge are warmed by open fireplaces and been stylishly decorated. The Lodge has three lounges, a breakfast room, main dining room and library. "Popped in" for coffee... Getting there is no small task in itself, so one would expect way more than a very average welcome for a 5 star spot. I'd certainly expect management, of some description, to make a little effort to come chat. Was also disappointed in the level of maintenance, with missing tiles and cracked and poorly kept timber frames, to name but a few. Must be awesome when it's snowing, but I'm not sure I'll be back if that's the only time they bring out the welcome mat.

High above on the Naudesnek Pass, and only accessable by a 4x4 vehicle, this Lodge is unique. Beautiful high mountainous area. We did not sleep over, but had a scone and tea.

A challenging drive to the lodge, however when one arrives the drive will be forgotten. A superb location and a lovely structure. The staff are genuinely welcoming. The plant life is out of this world.

An absolutely amazing venue with the friendliest staff who went the extra mile to ensure we enjoyed the complete 5 star package. Thank you to each and every one of them! The meals were absolutely delicious; tasty, freshly prepared and the different varieties of each of the daily 5 course dinners was first class. A high clearance vehicle recommended due to sections of the rocky mountain pass road along the Naude's Nek Pass. The astonishing views are well worth the drive. All in all, a memorable experience in a tranquil retreat. A beautiful Lodge in beautiful surroundings. The highest Lodge in South Africa!
