We stayed at The Edwardian Hotel from 16–19 December 2025. Our family booked two 3-bedroom units, one 2-bedroom unit, and two 1-bedroom units. Unfortunately, our overall experience was extremely disappointing and stressful.
We travelled from Durban to Port Edward and arrived slightly early. We politely asked if we could leave our bags in one of the rooms while waiting for check-in so we could go to the beach. We understood that the rooms might not be ready. However, instead of a simple explanation, Antoinette at reception began shouting at my sister. She started banging tables and chairs, raising her voice, and behaving aggressively. She even told us that “we will not get along,” which was very unprofessional and upsetting.
There was also a gentleman in the office with her. I did not get his name, but he was wearing blue overalls and is Indian. When we raised concerns about the water issue, he told us that if we were complaining, we should get our own plumber. This response was shocking and completely unacceptable from hotel staff.
We were informed that water to the rooms would be cut off and that we would need to use buckets to flush the toilets. When we asked why the water was being closed, we were told it was to save water. This was never communicated before our arrival. Using toilets without running water, especially during a fully paid stay in peak December season, was extremely uncomfortable. At night, the smell became unbearable.
We tried to cancel or asked to be moved to another hotel, possibly in Umhlanga. Antoinette said it was not her problem. We contacted head office, but we were told refunds would take seven days. Because it was peak holiday season and hotels were fully booked, we were forced to stay since we could not secure alternative accommodation without an immediate refund.
The property itself had an unpleasant smell from reception to the rooms. The staircases leading to the rooms looked neglected and resembled an abandoned structure. The atmosphere felt dark and poorly maintained. I did not take pictures because I was extremely stressed by the situation and the way we were treated.
To be fair, the cleaning ladies were very friendly and respectful. The kitchen staff and team were excellent and prepared wonderful breakfasts every morning. They were the only positive part of our stay.
This holiday was meant to be a relaxing family break, but instead it became a very stressful experience due to poor service, lack of professionalism, and unacceptable responses to serious concerns. I hope management addresses these issues urgently so that future guests are treated with dignity and respect. Finally, yes, we booked directly with the hotel and I was assisted by Antoinette with the reservation process.
