A Retreat into Paradise Over Easter weekend, I took a drive from Cape Town to Bonniedale, and it was worth every kilometre. From the moment I arrived, the land drew me in. We were welcomed by a group of beautiful wild horses grazing in front of our cottage, with the sun setting behind endless rolling hills and mountains. It was the perfect introduction to a place that feels untouched, peaceful, and incredibly special. I spent the days exploring the walking trails, winding through ever-changing landscapes filled with beautiful indigenous flora. There are crystal-clear rock pools and a waterfall to cool off in on hot afternoons, and a picturesque little lake that’s perfect for a braai, a refreshing swim , or simply stretching out in the shade for an afternoon nap while listening to nature. There’s a little swing over the lake that sent me into a meditative state at sunset. The house has a few different fire places that keep the rooms very cosy , also making it perfect for a winter getaway in the mountains. We also headed out on the 4x4 trails, and the views from the mountain peaks were absolutely breathtaking. Along the way, we discovered old toll houses and historic stone structures that tell the story of the land and add another layer of magic to the experience. What I loved most about Bonniedale was how quickly time seemed to slow down. There are no distractions—just wide open spaces, fresh mountain air, birdsong, and the simple joy of reconnecting with nature. It’s the kind of place that reminds you how good it feels to switch off and simply be. I spent four days there, but it honestly felt like I’d been away for two weeks. I left feeling rested, grounded, and completely recharged. Bonniedale is a truly special place, whether you’re looking for adventure, a romantic getaway, or simply somewhere to escape the pace of everyday life. I couldn’t recommend it more highly—it is absolutely worth the drive, and I already can’t wait to return.

This farm is very special. There are not many places left in the world where one can gaze out at nighttime and see zero light pollution; not a single light in the distance, only stars. You’re completely surrounded by mountains, fynbos and rivers. Being the old ox wagon trail route over the mountains between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, there’s lots of history on the farm. We also spotted a few of their wild horses grazing on the hill side. We explored the hiking trails through the kloofs, a few 4X4 routes and swam in the rock pools. The dam also has a nice braai area, although we didn’t use it. A group of us stayed in the chalet, which was clean, well-kitted and has a lovely communal braai area. Woke every morning to lots of hoopoes in the tree around us. We’ll definitely be back as even though we were there for a week, there’s lots to still explore.

We had the most wonderful stay at the AppelHuis at Bonniedale. The cottage is beautiful, spacious and perfectly positioned with breathtaking views over the lake and the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains. One of the highlights was hiking the incredible trails straight from our doorstep and soaking in the wood-fired KolKol hot tub under a sky full of stars. Evenings spent with the fireplace crackling made it the perfect winter escape. If you’re looking for peace, nature and a place to truly switch off, Bonniedale is something special. Everything was comfortable and surrounded by spectacular scenery. Highly recommended!

We popped in for a quick Sunday day trip from George. Tested out some of the 4x4 trails with a high clearance Hilux. The trails proved to be very exciting and posed a pleasant challenge. There are 3 more to explore as we were just a single stock vehicle. The flora and fauna is absolutely beautiful! After the trails we had a quick braai at the dam with nice facilities and beautiful views. Lovely hosts who we will see again soon.
