Our one-night stay at Pezula Nature Retreat arrived wrapped in a cold, wet and windy May afternoon, with a round of golf originally setting the tone for the visit. Recent storms in the region unfortunately led to the golf course closure, and while disappointing, understandable given the circumstances.
Arrival through the manned estate security gate felt somewhat impersonal, with guests simply waved through toward reception. Inside, however, the retreat’s dark, warm interiors immediately created a welcoming contrast to the weather outside. Reception service was polite, though lacking the warmth and attentiveness one expects from a property positioned as a luxury nature retreat. A limited welcome drink selection was offered, although the warm beverage option was unavailable at the time.
The atmosphere briefly lost its sense of calm when a particularly loud social-media-focused group dominated the shared spaces — something worth noting for travellers specifically seeking tranquillity and exclusivity.
We stayed in one of the Eco Sky Suites, which proved to be the highlight of the visit. Spacious and thoughtfully designed with sustainability in mind, the suite uses natural ventilation and heating instead of traditional air conditioning. The décor reflects earthy South African textures and tones beautifully, while the generous kitchenette, comfortable lounge area and especially the fireplace created the perfect refuge from the relentless rain outside.
Dining at both dinner and breakfast was satisfactory but fairly standard, lacking the culinary distinction often associated with premium retreats. The service experience became slightly puzzling during turndown service, where a staff member appeared to simply wait inside the suite upon our return from dinner — without any noticeable servicing completed, such as replenishing the firewood or preparing the room. The same occurred again the following morning after breakfast, leaving the interaction somewhat awkward and confusing as we had to asked for privacy.
Overall, Pezula Nature Retreat will appeal most to travellers who value spacious accommodation and a large-scale resort environment over highly personalised luxury service. The setting remains beautiful, particularly during dramatic weather, and the Eco Sky Suite itself offers a memorable and comfortable stay immersed in nature.
